DOUG AND MIKE STARN ON THE ROOF

ART:
Right now, atop the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the multitalented art-making twins Doug and Mike Starn are building an intricately beautiful structure—human termite mound? Anthill?—out of 5,000 pieces of willowy bamboo lashed together by 50 miles of rope. You can walk on the piece, called Big BambĂș, as if it were a bridge, albeit one built by spiders from Mars. Think of it as an extension of Central Park itself: winding paths, an elaborate metaphor for growth and mutation, premodern sculpture, and a fantastical unnamed architecture of the mind. There’s no better spot on a warm Friday afternoon. — NYMAG
