FEDERICO URIBE: PENCILISM
ART:
The Chelsea Art Museum, Home of the Miotte Foundation, is pleased to present Federico Uribe: Pencilism. This is a follow up to Uribe’s Human Nature exhibition at CAM, sponsored by PUMA, in 2007. Pencilism is a reflection on the interaction between material, technique and art history. “The color pencil, a simple utilitarian object but with direct references to creation and childhood, becomes the material of my paintings and sculptures,” says Uribe. “With an embroidery-like technique of studding, I have created art works that depict my emotional landscape and force the viewer to re-envision how the pencil and the creation process are perceived...Thru September 5, 2009

ZACHARI LOGAN
ART:
Zachari Logan was born in 1980 in Saskatoon (Canada) where he currently lives and works. He is a 28 year old Canadian artist who paints and draws his own body as subject, engaging personal narratives that contradict and question existing notions of masculine representation. As a queer man interested in the vocabulary of realist figurative painting and drawing, his body is catalyst for his fascination with masculine stereotypic portrayals. Utilizing historic themes of male bravado, heroism and narcissism he juxtaposes the mundane realities of everyday contemporary life. His narratives are situated within the complex visual language of Neo-classical, Baroque, and Renaissance painting. This specific vocabulary adds both psychological and metaphoric weight to his conceptual process; locating his marginalized identity within historical and contemporary archetypes.

SIREN MUSIC FESTIVAL 2009
EVENT:
This year, the Village Voice's Siren Fest evokes the gods of indie past, present, and future, with a strong lineup headlined by '90s alternative heroes Built to Spill. Other highlights include Frank Black's new band Grand Duchy, Scottish folk rockers Frightened Rabbit, and atmospheric shoegazers A Place to Bury Strangers. Arrive early to catch local faves Bear Hands (we knew it wouldn't be long, guys) and electro-pop punks Micachu & the Shapes. Also be sure to pack the sunblock and a bathing suit; it gets scorching out on the pavement, but you can always dip into the Atlantic for a quick cool-down. (Really, we were just there last week and it wasn't gross at all.)FLAVORPILL

JEAN MIOTTE : VISUAL CRESCENDO
ART:
Jean Miotte: Selection from the Permeanent Collection
Born in 1926, Jean Miotte began exhibiting in 1952 and continues to this day. As one of the important protagonists of L'Art Informel, his work is inspired by the desire of the postwar generation to create a universal human language through art, a path to peace, a way to overcome frontiers after the horrors of war. Miotte's work is greatly influenced by jazz, and especially by dance.
