It's plausible that your whole conception of Frenchness comes from the photographs of Jacques Henri Lartigue. His images of fashionable ladies strolling the Paris boulevards, of early auto races and biplanes—so Français that they verge on being café-poster clichés, except that Lartigue was one of the first to get them on film. Before his death in 1986, Lartigue left his work to the French government, and this week, about 50 of his prints come to Howard Greenberg. ART:
Extended through November 29! American artist Roxy Paine (born in 1966) has created a 130-foot-long by 45-foot-wide stainless-steel sculpture, especially for the Museum’s Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden. Giving viewers the sense of being immersed in the midst of a cataclysmic force, Maelstrom (2009) is Paine’s largest and most ambitious work to date. The latest in a diverse body of work, this sculpture is one of the artist’s Dendroids based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia. Set against Central Park and its architectural backdrop, the installation explores the interplay between the natural world and the built environment amid nature’s inherently chaotic processes.

The Nex fall collection, “Cameras For Eyes and Horses For Hearts” is inspired by the military uniforms of the American Civil War. The source of inspiration is fitting as Danish born designer, Lars Stoten has selected a new home for Mjölk. Trying out their luck, Mjölk has taken up roots in America’s fashion capital of New York.
Mjölk’s fall collection borrows rugged and masculine elements from the American Civil War and pairs them with Mjölk’s signature proportions and cuts. Earth tones are wonderfully complimented by bursts of electric blue, deep red, and mustard. Stern neutral-based coats and blazers are contrasted by cheerful chunky knits and fashion-forward leggings. The collection’s finishing touch is a striking selection of boots, moccasins, and metal-framed backpacks. Taken as a whole, Mjölk’s latest collection offers the sophisticated, yet youthful zest that fall 2009 craves.

Whitney Museum of American Art says:
Artist Sadie Benning is known for her experimental video narratives, which she started making in the late 1980s. First shown here in the Whitney's 1993 Biennial, and again in the 2000 Biennial, Benning now presents her latest video installation Play Pause (2006) as part of the Whitney's Contemporary Series. The two-channel video departs from Benning’s earlier work, cutting together hundreds of the artist’s gouache drawings of urban landscapes, figures, and abstractions. With its fragmented split-screen perspective, durational takes of still drawings, and occasional use of color filters, Play Pause speaks to the heightening of perception that accompanies periods of loss. This is Benning’s first solo museum exhibition in New York.(FLAVORPILL)
