PLAIN AIR
ART:
Plain Air is the second in a series of exhibitions put together by the loose-knit collective/publishing-printmaking project called Apenest. Plain Air explores the theme of landscape as the space we inhabit, falling somewhere between reality and fantasy. Some artists address the topic head on; Patrick Casey’s updated New England wall art puts a shocking twist on familiar imagery, while Conor Thompson has a more topical approach focusing on the alienation of the modern landscape. Others transform the idea of landscape completely as a form of space beyond physical constrictions.(Flavorpill)Thru Nov 14

MARTHA WAINWRIGHT
MUSIC:
Martha Wainwright Sings Piaf w/The Mittenstrings Live Tonight at (Le) Poisson Rouge NYC
We thought we had a favorite Wainwright (that'd be brother Rufus). But after seeing sister Martha — at Rufus' Judy Garland extravaganza a while back — our loyalties shifted. The folky chanteuse has an amazing voice, and we're thrilled to hear her sing the songs of another classic singer, Edith Piaf. While we love her own original material, we're getting spine-tingles just thinking what she can do to "Non, je ne Regrette Rien" (take that, Inception). - Katherine M. (FLAVORPILL)

SEDUCTIVE SUBVERSION: WOMEN POP ARTIST 1958-1968
ART:
SEDUCTIVE SUBVERSION: WOMEN POP ARTIST 1958-1968
This large-scale exhibition examines the impact of women artists on the traditionally male-dominated field of Pop art. It reconsiders the narrow definition of the Pop art movement and reevaluates its critical reception. In recovering important female artists, the show expands the canon to reflect more accurately the women working internationally during this period. The exhibition features more than fifty artworks by Chryssa, Niki de Saint Phalle, Rosalyn Drexler, Marisol, Yayoi Kusama, Jann Haworth, Vija Celmins, Lee Lozano, Marjorie Strider, Idelle Weber, and Joyce Wieland, among others.

BACK TO THE FUTURE : ROB ROTH
ART:
The Wild Project is pleased to present Back to the Future, a solo exhibition of photographs by Rob Roth October 13th – 30th 2010.
Opening Reception for the Artist:
Wednesday, October 13, 6 - 9pm
DJ Michael Cavadias
Performance by Marti Domination and Beaut 8pm
The works in this exhibition were created specifically for the spectacular New York club event Click + Drag, which ran for four years beginning in 1996. Founded by Roth with nightlife legends Chi Chi Valenti and Kitty Boots, Click + Drag began as a Saturday-night weekly event at Valenti’s experimental MOTHER nightclub and ran for four years in over two hundred editions, each with a different theme. Exploring the interface between nightclubs and computer culture with a strictly enforced dress code, the event quickly built a fanatic following. The textures of those nights were otherworldly, created and enhanced by Roth’s pioneering video installations and performances that both encouraged and complimented the antics of his guests.

ROLE MODELS
BOOKS:
Role Models by John Waters
As familiar as Waters' obsessions have become over the years, writes the Onion AV Club, "he remains an affable, enthusiastic tour guide to the sort of beauty found only at the edges of good taste." Such beauty includes the profane, the violent, and the shocking, but it's par for the course for this once transgressive filmmaker and his insightful, obnoxious, and entertaining essays. Only the essay "Leslie," about Waters's friendship with Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, serving a life sentence for murder, raised debate. A few reviewers found the essay reflective, while others condemned Waters for dodging "the murky moral issues of her story" (Los Angeles Times). Role Models isn't for everyone--but even "dilettantes at liberty to skip around will find a lot to charm them" (New York Times Book Review).

THE ORIGINAL COPY...
ART:
The Original Copy:Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today
This exhibition includes familiar pictures from the family album: Atget’s images of vases from Versailles; Bellmer’s pornographic pics of naked dolls; Man Ray’s shots of Duchamp’s Large Glass; Robert Mapplethorpe’s portrait of the late Louise Bourgeois with a massive craggy phallus tucked lovingly under her arm. It’s a doctrinaire love letter to the canon—but still fun.Thru 11/1
