CANDIDA HOFER
ART:
Candida Höfer
At Sonnabend Gallery
536 W. 22nd St., New York, NY 10011
nr. Eleventh Ave.
Candida Höfer’s intensely detailed, voluptuously colored pictures of interiors, libraries, and museums in Naples and Florence vie for beauty and greatness with Canaletto’s enticing pictures of Venice. At Sonnabend, I dissolved in front of Höfer’s recent large-format photographs of Italian ceilings and frescoes; I gaped in wonder at spread-eagled nude gods peering down from atop doorways, and wondered, Who walked these rooms, squaring the ideas of study and eroticism? Höfer’s visions of old books, ornate theaters, and opulent interiors (pictured, Biblioteca Dei Girolamini Napoli III, 2009) are full of details that turn into whole worlds. Even her stark picture of Michelangelo’s David is a wry feminist commentary on Thomas Struth’s more sensational image of the same subject. — Jerry Saltz NYMAG

MARINA ABRAMOVIC
ART:
Marina Abramović: Chair for Man and His Spirit
Thru May 10, 2010
On the occasion of the upcoming MoMA retrospective Marina Abramović: The Artist Is Present, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center will reinstall Marina Abramović's Chair for Man and His Spirit. Abramović created the work especially for P.S.1 on the occasion of their 1997 reopening. According to the artist, she felt that when you have a new house it is important to have furniture for the spirits. The spirit chair is positioned three stories above the human chair at ground level; visitors are invited to sit in the human chair. The artist explains that this work is part of a "series of transitory objects built with the idea that the audience could actively take part." Abramović does not "consider these works as sculptures, but as transitory objects to trigger physical or mental experiences among the public through direct interaction." Chair for Man and His Spirit will be installed in P.S.1's courtyard, from February 27 to May 10, 2010.

March 27: Saturday Sessions presents WORK FOR LOVE II by Desi Santiago and by music from Saint Buck
Date: Saturday, March 27, 2010
Time: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Performance begins at 4:00pm in the 3rd Floor Main Gallery
Desi Santiago is a NYC based Puerto Rican artist. His practice spans from 1990 to the present with a strong foundation begun in NYC nightlife culture and crossing over into fashion and art worlds. Santiago's work draws from, addresses, and utilizes the respective vocabularies and iconography of these worlds to create ceremonial experiences and relational performances which deal with identity, exchange, and the duality of mourning/celebration. His practice is that of "the host", wherein the body is the channel and receptor for circumstance, experience, and identities to pass through resulting in a visual vocabulary of object, installation, and performance.
Saint Buck is a DJ duo featuring Desi Santiago & and artist Jared Buckheister, known around the club circuit for their ability to keep the crowd moving to disco.
