AMBER VALLETTA
MODEL OF A DECADE :
Eternal muse and legendary mannequin Amber Valletta has made a number of screen appearances in this decade, but it's her turn in the upcoming futuristic sci-fi film Gamer that will make all the difference. We got close to Valletta for the next issue, in which she reveals a desire to experience every genre of moviemaking—from romantic comedy to Shakespeare and everything in between. No one's going to box this one in. Hedi Slimane snapped pics of Valletta looking as seethingly perfect as ever.

DIONNE FARRIS
MUSIC:
Joe's Pub says:
Dionne Farris, Grammy nominated singer/songwriter, was recognized for her first #1 single, I Know, from her critically acclaimed debut CD Wild-Seed Wild-Flower. Dionne's beloved hit single Hopeless from the movie Love Jones was an instant classic, staying at #1 on the R&B Billboard chart for a record 18 weeks. She graced us once again in 2007 with her appropriately titled new CD, Signs of Life. If there's one thing we know of Dionne and the music she makes, then we should prepare ourselves for the next level in the musical journey of the original soul rocker.

ABBEY BRANDEN
ART:
Abbey Branden :Punk Photo
Up-and-coming Gowanus spot Littlefield hosts this exhibition of New York local Abbey Braden's rock photography. Braden has made a name for herself photographing practically every band we like, at every show we were at (or wish we were). In a time when anyone with a digital camera can claim to be a photographer, Braden stands out with work emphasizing sweaty close-ups and action shots that capture rockers at their most dynamic and glamorous. This is one of the few times when comparisons to Mick Rock are appropriate.

PHOTOCONCEPTUALISM 1966-1973
ART:
The final installment in a three-part series taking a closer look at photography in the Whitney’s collection, this exhibition focuses on works by conceptual artists of the late 1960s and early 1970s. During that time, photography became a favored medium (along with video) for art that placed more importance on concepts than on aesthetic and material concerns and rejected the necessity of the gallery or museum as a primary site of exhibition. The presentation features work by Mel Bochner, Adrian Piper, Bruce Nauman, Michael Heizer, and others.

KAWS
ART:
Brian Donnelly, aka “KAWS”, gained recognition in the early 1990s by tagging walls and writing graffiti in and around Jersey City and New York. In the mid-1990s, he began appropriating advertisements from bus shelters and phone booths in New York City and painting a graphic, cartoon-like skull-and-crossbones image into them. He continued to develop this motif for the next few years, re-working advertising materials not only in bus shelters and phone booths in New York City, San Francisco, Paris, London, Berlin, and Tokyo.
His work has been featured in numerous publications, as well as exhibited at Colette, Paris, PARCO Gallery, Tokyo, MU Art Foundation, the Netherlands, at BAPE Gallery, Tokyo, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Miami, Gering & Lopez, Manhattan, and soon to be the Honor Fraser Gallery in Los Angeles.
KAWS got his BFA in illustration from The School of Visual Arts in New York City. After graduating he briefly worked for Disney as a freelance animator.
Heavily influenced by iconic characters from modern pop culture, such as Mickey Mouse, “The Michelin Man”, The Simpsons, The Smurfs, and SpongeBob SquarePants. KAWS’ work treads the fine line between art, commerce, cartoons, and commercials. It is a disruption of, as well as a tribute to, all objects produced, bought, sold, exchanged, desired, and cherished.
