BUSHWICK FILM FESTIVAL

FESTIVAL:
Before the sight-and-sound marathon known as the New York Film Festival begins, cinephiles can warm up their senses at the second annual Bushwick Film Festival. While it lacks household-name cachet, the weekend event is also free of the big-name festival's noblesse oblige; instead, the organizers celebrate the arty area's loft-like communal spirit with alternative performances, barbecues, brews, music, and an all-embracing program of films. The festivities are bookended by Lovisa Inserra's Buster, a Super 8 film about a man who embodies the titular put-down, and A Map for Saturday, a documentary about the worldwide wanderings of long-term travelers
From 22 to 24 August at Various Location in Bushwick, Brooklyn

THE GOOD LIFE

ART:
Stop whining that summer’s about to end and go drink in the sultry, sun-drenched photos at “The Good Life,” like this honey-hued bake scene captured by Carlos Pérez Siquier on a dog-day afternoon back in ’74. Then remind yourself that you, too, have a few weeks left to cake on the eye shadow, lube up with tanning oil, and show those impending autumnal blues that it ain’t over till it’s over. — Miranda Siegel (NYMAG)

NICKY SIANO

SUNDAY BEST FEAT. NICKY SIANO at THE YARD (400 Carrol Street)
Barriers to DJing are getting lower (read: iPods, blog house). As such, it's important to remember that playing records can be an art form. Nicky Siano, who's recently re-emerged in NYC via a successful residency at Santos, was one of the most influential figures in New York's early dance scene. Through his curation of the Gallery and early DJ sets at Studio 54 and Mancuso's Loft, Siano honed and refined a sound rooted in house and disco with soulful emotional resonance. Today, he hits the Yard for one of the summer's best parties, the appropriately titled Sunday Best!

BROOKLYN ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL

MUSIC FESTIVAL:
The Yard's rapidly becoming the go-to venue for summer ragers — this afternoon, it plays host to a grip of live bands and DJs in celebration of BK's neon splendor. Get your bounce on with Venezuelan booty-ravers Todosantos, check the onstage gymnastics of Purple Crush, gawk at Aussie duo Lismore's blond-bombshell frontwoman and brooding beatsmith, and thrash to Plant Music's digital-era rockers the Glass. Selectors Treasure Fingers, Cobra Krames, and Finger on the Pulse provide a few more opportunities to put your back into it. With giveaways from Ableton, Miller, and Local Tourist and a bike-wash benefit for the raucous DIY Showpaper kids, this tech-o-thon makes for a perfect Saturday in the greatest borough.
Today at The Yard 400 Carrol Street Brooklyn NYC

NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

FESTIVAL:
With more than 200 shows crammed into roughly two weeks, the Fringe is a feat of endurance. Urinetown, 21 Dog Years, and Bash'd are among the festival's success stories, although many more have fallen short of greatness. Half the fun is figuring out what to see, but for those short on time, one highlight is Steven Fechter's The Golden Aurora. Known for his controversial play and film The Woodsman (2004), Fechter asks what happens when a man loves a dog a little too much. Also of note are necrophilia-themed musical comedy Love is Dead; Krapp 39, a modern version of Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape; and Other Bodies, from emerging playwright August Schulenburg.Thru 24 August

JOHN VARVATOS ON BOWERY

SHOP WE LOVE:
John Varvatos on Bowery
315 Bowery is a well-known address to a lot of New Yorkers, as it was the location of iconic rock club CBGB for over 30 years. Now fashion designer John Varvatos is using the space as his newest boutique. John Varvatos Bowery is meant to merge the spot's rock n' roll heritage and the world of fashion, with offerings including vintage clothing, memorabilia, vinyl records, and 1970's audio equipment, sold alongside Varvatos' latest fashions, including a limited-edition 315 Bowery line, which will be available exclusively at the store in the fall. Not in the mood to shop? Then simply take in the graffiti- and flyer-covered walls, which remain virtually unchanged from the club's glory days.
