TOM SACHS

ART:
TOM SACHS is a sculptor, probably best known for his elaborate recreations of various Modern icons, all of them masterpieces of engineering and design of one kind or another. In an early show he made Knoll office furniture out of phone books and duct tape; later, he recreated Le Corbusier's 1952 Unité d'Habitation using only foamcore and a glue gun. Other projects have included his versions of various Cold War masterpieces, like the Apollo 11 Lunar Excursion Module, and the bridge of the battleship USS Enterprise. And because no engineering project is more complex and pervasive than the corporate ecosystem, he's done versions of those, too, including a McDonald's he built using plywood, glue, assorted kitchen appliances. He's also done Hello Kitty and her friends in materials ranging from foamcore to bronze..........

LEE FRIEDLANDER : AMERICA BY CAR

ART:
You may think you could take photos like these. At first glance, Lee Friedlander’s on-the-road pictures—192 of which are on view at the Whitney in Lee Friedlander: America by Car—seem so casual as to be throwaway snapshots. But keep looking, and you’ll see how the molded-plastic dashboards, the swoopy window pillars, and especially the images appearing in the mirrors all reshape the landscape they frame. The result is no more accidental than a Jackson Pollock drip painting and as deceptively difficult to create. — Christopher Bonanos (NYMAG)

BLOOD INTO GOLD

ART:
Blood into Gold: the Cinematic Alchemy of Alejandro Jodorowsky
The cult cinema of the 81-year-old, Chilean-born filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky (who will attend in person!) emerges from the underground at the Museum of Arts and Design this fall in its latest film series, running from September 23 - specially timed for the fall equinox - through October 8, 2010. Influenced by his work as a pantomime, theater director, philosopher, playwright, comic book artist, as well as his spiritual training in Zen Buddhism, shamanism, and the occult, Jodorowsky's films eschew traditional narratives, arcs and character tropes.
The six films showcased in "Blood into Gold: the Cinematic Alchemy of Alejandro Jodorowsky" depict dream worlds, brimming with symbols and steeped in mysticism, floating and colliding with the Surrealist concepts of anarchy and randomness - filtered through the hazy, acid-colored lens of psychedelia.
Highlights include his classics El Topo (Sept. 24) and Holy Mountain (Sept. 25), as well as his very first film La Cravate, based on a Thomas Mann novella.
On Saturday afternoon, September 25, Jodorowsky will lead an intimate master class in the museum. This seminar-style program will provide insight into Jodorowsky's thinking on the power of film and art, with attention given to art-making as a means to personal and spiritual enlightenment.
Movie tickets are: $10 general admission, $7 for MAD museum members and students with valid ID.
The MAD Theater is located on the below street level of MAD at 2 Columbus Circle at 59th Street.

SOPHIE THEALLET

FASHION.
Sophie Theallet : French, based in New York: what happens next? If you thought you couldn’t mix the French girly nonchalance with American preppy perfection, you are mistaken. There is something uncanny about her designs, they seem to portray a simple approach to the feminine figure but one has to go deeper without knowing where, being left with a question mark. In per se a seduction without a reiteration of the word.
