INTERMIX AT BOWERY HOTEL

FASHION WEEK:
Intermix operates 25 boutiques nationwide, including seven in New York, four in Florida and one in Las Vegas. This season, the purveyor of trendy is celebrating its 15th anniversary. To coincide with New York's Fashion Week, Intermix will host an intimate dinner for designers, friends and VIPs on the terrace of the Bowery Hotel on September 6. Diane von Furstenberg and Jay Godfrey will toast the occasion with Sari Sloane, vice president of merchandising, and CEO Khajak Keledjian. It will be followed by a party in the same space. London-based DJ Eclectic Method will create a retrospective of interactive vignettes. The night will likely entail a surprise performance and hefty gift bags, so stick it out til the end.

In conjunction with PAPER magazine and Creative Time, Deitch Projects presents its fourth annual Art Parade, once again turning West Broadway into a carnival with manifold performers, artists, and floats. As always, chaos rules: expect wild inflatable creations by rogue street illustrator and Deitch artist Barry McGee, as well as a motley crew of cavemen, hot dogs, and astronauts courtesy of monster-maker Kenny Scharf. Even if you miss Yoko Ono's project involving 365 white balloons or the troupe of rainbow roller skaters, don't sleep on the performance by topless alien-rock outfit the Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. BUSHWICK FILM FESTIVAL

FESTIVAL:
Before the sight-and-sound marathon known as the New York Film Festival begins, cinephiles can warm up their senses at the second annual Bushwick Film Festival. While it lacks household-name cachet, the weekend event is also free of the big-name festival's noblesse oblige; instead, the organizers celebrate the arty area's loft-like communal spirit with alternative performances, barbecues, brews, music, and an all-embracing program of films. The festivities are bookended by Lovisa Inserra's Buster, a Super 8 film about a man who embodies the titular put-down, and A Map for Saturday, a documentary about the worldwide wanderings of long-term travelers

Paul McCarthy: Central Symmetrical Rotation Movement
Three Installations, Two Films
This exhibition brings together a group of new and rarely seen works by Paul McCarthy (b. 1945), one of the most influential American artists of his generation. The show focuses on a core strand of McCarthy's work: the use of architecture to create perceptual disorientation in the viewer through spinning mirrors, rotating walls, projections, and altered space. In Bang Bang Room (1992), the space almost seems to come alive as the walls of a free-standing domestic room move slowly in and out, the doors in each wall wildly slamming open and shut. In Spinning Room (2008), first conceived in 1971, but being realized for the first time for this show, live images of viewers are rotated and projected onto double-sided screens that appear infinitely reflected on four surrounding mirrored walls, enclosing the viewer in a wildly disorienting space. In Mad House (2008), being created for this show, a room spins disconcertingly on its axis. Two recently rediscovered films by McCarthy, one made in 1966 and one in 1971, reveal the artist's interest in perceptual puzzlement from the very beginning of his career.

Nicky Siano, who's recently re-emerged in NYC via a successful residency at Santos, was one of the most influential figures in New York's early dance scene. Through his curation of the Gallery and early DJ sets at Studio 54 and Mancuso's Loft, Siano honed and refined a sound rooted in house and disco with soulful emotional resonance. NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL FRINGE FESTIVAL

FESTIVAL:
With more than 200 shows crammed into roughly two weeks, the Fringe is a feat of endurance. Urinetown, 21 Dog Years, and Bash'd are among the festival's success stories, although many more have fallen short of greatness. Half the fun is figuring out what to see, but for those short on time, one highlight is Steven Fechter's The Golden Aurora. Known for his controversial play and film The Woodsman (2004), Fechter asks what happens when a man loves a dog a little too much. Also of note are necrophilia-themed musical comedy Love is Dead; Krapp 39, a modern version of Beckett's Krapp's Last Tape; and Other Bodies, from emerging playwright August Schulenburg.Thru 24 August
